Just about an hour later.
They had followed Chris in his near top of the range Audi, covered in Sponsors stickers, with the now all too familiar logo of the radio station on the bonnet and that of the garage that had supplied it on the roof and back. He had led the way through the country lanes, back where they had come, passing back under the A30 and arriving at yet another small village, though probably larger than the one they had just left.
The atmosphere in the mini had been strained. Chris had met them after his finale and led them out to the car park, pointed out his car (which was a little unnecessary as, along with everything else, his name was emblazoned on the side in bold red lettering) and told Karen roughly where they were going, with the instruction ‘Follow me, I’ll keep an eye on you.’
Karen’s mind had been in a state of turmoil since she had looked up to see those once-familiar eyes looking down on her. Her world seemed turned on its head. Chris Andrews here in Cornwall and a radio presenter at that! She remembered how their last conversation had ended, most of it still pretty clear in her head. It would be; as she had played it over and over again in the years since then. She wondered what Chris thought of her, he had been very angry on the ‘phone all those years ago and said things to her she didn’t like to hear. She wondered, as she steered her pride and joy around these narrow country lanes, what he really thought of her. If he would have come over had he known she was there, but there again he didn’t have to suggest going on afterwards. Then she wondered why she cared.
Then there was his condescending phrase as he’d climbed in to his own personal mobile advertising hording; ‘Follow me, I’ll keep an eye on you.’ Patronising git! Still having to look after the little woman! There again maybe he was just being nice and anyway she wasn’t his little woman.
Then there was Sue, what had she been playing at acting as some sort of ‘match maker’? Perhaps she wasn’t, maybe Karen was seeing too much into two old friends (could you describe Chris and Sue like that?) catching up.
She suddenly felt seventeen again; she couldn’t remember the last time she had tied herself up with so many mental knots as she had tonight.
Yes she could; the last time Chris Andrews was in her life.
For her part Sue sat silently waiting for what was likely to be a backlash sometime before they retired to their hotel rooms tonight.
The right-hand indicator on the Audi started to flash and it turned into a narrow gap between two buildings, the one on the left being the restaurant where presumably they were going. It was the only building in the little street that had any lights still shining. Karen followed Chris as he turned at the back of the building where an adequate size car park came into view.
